How to make powerful herbicides at home?
Brushwood
Unwanted or “spontaneous” plants have a common mission: to ruin your garden! According to the Agronomic Research Institute, there are almost 5000 shoots per m², surprisingly, can you confirm this? Worse still, these poisonous weeds are not only harmful to edible grasses, but also to biodiversity: bees, birds and insects are deprived of an excellent food source.

To compensate for this phenomenon, however, we abandon pesticides and equip ourselves with homemade herbicides, which we can prepare at will without any hassle. We roll up our sleeves and put on our professional gardener caps… Come on, come on!

  1. Boiling water
    In your garden, alternatives to chemical weedkillers can be found with everyday products. Start, quite simply, with boiling water. Just pour it on a weed and the effect is almost immediate. The heat will kill the plant by bursting the cells. This method is more appropriate on isolated grasses , for example on a terrace or driveway.
  2. Cooking water
    The cooking water from potatoes, rice or even pasta is very effective in eliminating unwanted plants. Preferably pour it boiling for better efficiency. This water loaded with starch is more effective than hot water alone. Be careful though, starch leaves an unsightly film. Up to you !
  3. Sea water
    Third variation of water for weeding: sea water! Its use remains reserved for unplanted spaces , such as paths, to the extent that its high sodium content risks damaging or even burning crops.
  4. Baking soda
    Sprinkle a few grams of this miracle product on unwanted plants, then wet the surface to be weeded before leaving it to act for a few minutes. Note that bicarbonate has little effect on plants that are already well established.
  5. White vinegar
    Another very versatile and very affordable product that works wonders! We no longer present white vinegar and its multiple advantages, including that of a natural contact weedkiller . This burns the aerial parts of weeds, but does not attack the roots. To properly weed, dilute 50% white vinegar in one part water, then spray the weeds with this preparation.
  6. Herbicide plants
    Some plant species are naturally herbicidal. Plants from the marigold family such as marigold produce substances that are toxic to bindweed and quackgrass. Ground cover plants , like mulch, hide access to light and prevent the growth of weeds.

Finally, some plants produce leaves which, once crushed, can be used as a natural weedkiller. This is the case with nettles, which must be left to macerate in water before using the mixture as a weedkiller and fertilizer. Walnut leaves are also effective, they contain a molecule called “juglone” which is known to slow down plant growth.

  1. Wood ash
    In the garden, ashes have the double advantage of being a powerful weedkiller (by affecting the PH of the soil, they modify the acidity and naturally eliminate moss from the lawn), but also a fortifier for plants .

Be careful, however: ash is not suitable for all plants; Excessive use can cause disease (chlorosis) but also be harmful to soil humus.

  1. Elbow grease!
    For the cleanest and most ecological natural weeding possible , the best way is to remove weeds by hand. To do this, do not hesitate to use suitable tools such as a hoe or a manual weeder to access the root more easily. It is essential to remove it to prevent the grass from growing back.

  1. Acetic acid in white vinegar
    The champion of impossible missions? It’s obviously white vinegar! A versatile acid solution which, thanks to the acetic acid it contains, has proven effective for cleaning and maintaining the house, but also in the garden, especially for destroying weeds.

To use it for weeding, it is used in the following way:

Mix 5 liters of water with 200 ml of white vinegar in a watering can fitted with a pouring spout;
We spray the bad plants with this natural herbicide and wait for the magic to happen;
Affected plants wilt and turn yellow and can be pulled out!
Congratulations, you have brilliantly saved your garden… Here’s to the pretty plants!
